The Magic of Spring: Awakening the Body & Mind with Ayurveda

Spring is the king of seasons – a time of sunshine and cheer, love and creativity."  - Vasant Lad.

Spring is here! 🌿A season of renewal, growth, fresh possibilities. The days are getting longer, the air is warmer, and energy is rising. Just as nature awakens from winter, so do we.

This transition is the perfect opportunity to shake off stagnation, reset the body and mind, and align with the vibrant energy of the season.

In Ayurveda, spring is considered the King of Seasons.

A time of sunshine, joy, creativity, and new beginnings. But it’s also a season that requires mindful balance. The lingering dampness of winter can create an excess of Kapha dosha.  To truly thrive, we need to support our body’s natural detoxification processes, adjust our diet, and embrace movement that re-energises our system.

So, how can you harness the energy of spring to feel lighter, more vibrant, and in tune with nature? Ayurveda gives us some beautiful rituals to cleanse, lighten, and align with nature’s flow. Let’s dive in.

🌿 Understanding the Ayurvedic Perspective on Spring

The transition into spring is a time for decluttering the mind and rejuvenating the body. During the late winter and early spring months, the Kapha dosha - governed by earth and water elements - tends to accumulate, causing heaviness, congestion, and lethargy.

Much like melting snow, excess Kapha starts to liquefy in spring, leading to seasonal allergies such as mucus buildup, brain fog, and sluggish digestion. If you’re feeling bloated, tired, or congested, it’s time to reduce Kapha and bring in lightness, mobility, and warmth.

🌱 Spring Nutrition: Eating with the Season (And What to Avoid)

Ayurveda teaches us that nature provides exactly what we need for each season. In spring, we naturally crave lighter, bitter, and astringent foods that help balance Kapha.

This time of year calls for foods that counterbalance the heaviness of Kapha—light, dry, warm, and invigorating.

Fill your plate with:

🍃Bitter greens (spinach, kale, arugula, dandelion)

🌿 Sprouts & Cruciferous veggies (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, radishes, asparagus)

🍓 Berries and astringent fruits - High in antioxidants and naturally detoxifying

🌶️ Pungent spices like ginger, black pepper, cloves, and fenugreek

What to cut back on:

  • Heavy, oily foods like nuts, dairy, and red meat

  • Starchy vegetables like white potatoes or squash

  • Excess sweet and refined carbohydrates

  • Meat - if you eat it, opt for lighter options like chicken or white fish

Your digestive fire (Agni) naturally slows in spring, so Ayurveda recommends eating less than you did in winter to support balance. Light, warming meals like quinoa, lentils, and broth-based soups will help keep digestion strong.

💡 Spring Digestive Tip: Incorporate honey into your teas and meals - unlike other sweeteners, it has a heating effect that helps cut through Kapha congestion.

🔥 Wake Up & Move: Shaking Off Winter Stagnation

Kapha loves to settle in and stay - which means if we don’t actively move it out, we can feel sluggish, heavy, or unmotivated.

Now is the time to get things moving! Ayurveda recommends:

🚶‍♀️ Daily movement – a brisk walk after lunch helps digestion & clears mental fog.

💃 Invigorating workouts – cardio, dynamic yoga, and strength training work wonders.

🙆 Kapha-reducing yoga postures – include asanas like fish, boat, bow, locust, lion, camel, headstand, and shoulder stand.

🌬️ Breathwork (pranayama) – try Bhastrika (bellows breath) and Kapalabhati (breath of fire) to energise your system

And most importantly, wake up early! Ayurveda says sleeping past sunrise increases Kapha imbalance, so set your alarm, get moving, and embrace the energy of the season.

✨ Spring Ritual: Manifest & Set Intentions

Spring is a season of new beginnings. Just as nature blossoms, so can our goals, dreams, and aspirations. One powerful way to harness this energy is through -

A Spring Equinox Intention-Setting Ritual:

📝 Write down three things you wish to manifest this season.

💭 Choose three words that describe your intentions (e.g., renewal, vitality, joy).

🌸 Breathe deeply, visualise your goals, and embody the energy of growth.

✍🏼Include some journaling or meditation for deeper integration

Use this time to clear out what no longer serves you - whether it’s clutter, negative thought patterns, or habits that drain your energy.

Much like nature, we’re meant to shed the old and make space for new growth. So, think of this time as your own personal "spring cleaning" - for your body, your mind, and your soul.
